How to Import Electronic Products from China?

By | April 9, 2026

Importing electronics from China to India in 2026 involves a rigorous multi-layered certification process. Because the Indian government has tightened quality control orders (QCOs) to reduce low-quality imports, missing even one certificate can lead to your shipment being detained or rejected at the port.

Here is the essential checklist of mandatory certifications.

1. Mandatory Indian Certifications (For Customs Clearance)

These are required by Indian Customs and regulatory bodies to allow the goods into the country.

A. BIS Certification (Compulsory Registration Scheme – CRS)

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration is the most critical for electronics.

  • What it covers: Laptops, tablets, mobile phones, power banks, LED lights, chargers, and most consumer electronics.
  • Requirement: The product must be tested in a BIS-recognized lab in India. The manufacturer (the Chinese factory) must be registered with BIS.
  • Marking: The product must bear the “Standard Mark” with the unique registration number ($R-XXXXXXXX$).

B. WPC ETA (Equipment Type Approval)

If your electronic product has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or any wireless capability, you need this from the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) wing.

  • What it covers: Wireless headphones, smartwatches, Wi-Fi routers, or even remote-controlled toys.
  • Process: Can often be obtained via Self-Declaration (ETA-SD) for standard consumer devices.

C. BEE Star Labeling (Energy Efficiency)

Required by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for products that consume significant power.

  • What it covers: Televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators, and certain LED lamps.
  • Requirement: You must register the brand and the specific model. The product must display the “Star Label” indicating its energy efficiency.

D. EPR Registration (E-Waste Management)

Under the 2022/2023 E-Waste rules, importers must register with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

  • Purpose: You must prove you have a plan to collect and recycle a certain percentage of the electronics you sell in India.

2. Mandatory Documentation for the Importer (India)

Before the shipment leaves China, you (the Indian buyer) must have:

  • IEC (Importer Exporter Code): Issued by the DGFT.
  • GST Registration: For tax compliance.
  • AD Code Registration: Authorized Dealer code from your bank, registered at the specific port (e.g., Nhava Sheva or Chennai).

3. Required from the Chinese Side (Before Export)

The Chinese manufacturer must provide or hold these for the export to be successful and for your Indian compliance to be valid:

A. Chinese Export Documentation

  • GACC Registration: The factory must be registered with the General Administration of Customs of China.
  • Export License: The supplier must have the legal right to export electronics; otherwise, they must use an export agent.
  • Commercial Invoice & Detailed Packing List: Must match the BIS/WPC certificates exactly.

B. Manufacturer Certificates for BIS/WPC

  • ISO 9001 Certificate: Required as part of the BIS factory documentation.
  • Trademark Authorization: If you are importing a branded product, you need a letter from the brand owner authorizing you to use their BIS/WPC registrations in India.
  • Technical Documents: Circuit diagrams, PCB layouts, and critical component lists (CCLs) for the Indian lab testing.
